The Tk21-crore app launched by the Election Commission to help voters find election-related information, including polling booths, has stopped working ahead of election day. Election Commission Secretary General Jahangir Alam along with other officials announced on Monday that voters will be able to use an app to search for ballot papers from that day. However, voters said they could not access the app despite repeated attempts since the evening, Dhaka Tribune reported. EC system manager Ashraf Hossain said the app access issue is temporary and is expected to be resolved soon. He added that the number of users will increase the capacity and the application will become inaccessible.

The National Electoral Commission has launched a mobile application called ‘Smart Election Management BD’ which can be downloaded from Apple Store or Play Store. After logging in, users must enter their date of birth and voter ID card number to access various information, including the current National Assembly election, voter ID number and polling address, select and vote the serial number. The app also provides information about candidates, including their preferences and information about other voters in the same constituency, Dhaka Tribune reported.

The app handles real-time updates from the Election Commission, provides voting statistics every two hours and serves as a convenient tool for voters to access election-related information. Bangladesh is scheduled to vote on January 7. Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday urged people to exercise their right to vote in Sunday’s election to show that democracy will win in Bangladesh. “I stand before you today to ask for a vote in favor of the boat ticket,” he said in a nationally televised speech ahead of the January 7 election to establish the 12th Parliament.
